Viva Engage needs a Microsoft account for every user.teamly does not

Viva Engage is Microsoft's community layer and the Yammer successor, solid for licensed knowledge workers. For the field it means: without an Entra ID account and an M365 license, no access, no dedicated app, and the Viva suite is constantly being rebuilt. teamly reaches all employees without the Microsoft ecosystem.

Key differences

The differences that matter

Researched from publicly available sources, July 2026.

A production worker signing in to the app on his private smartphone

Without license and account requirement

Viva Engage requires an M365 license and an Entra ID account for each user, which IT must create and maintain. For blue-collar workforces, that means a permanent provisioning project. teamly: registration without a company email, without the Microsoft ecosystem.

Your own app instead of the Microsoft app

Viva Engage is only available as a Microsoft app; branding is limited to logos within the Microsoft interfaces. teamly publishes your own app under your name in the App Store and on Google Play.

A predictable product instead of a suite rebuild

Microsoft is constantly rebuilding the Viva suite: Viva Topics and Viva Goals were discontinued, the Engage live events end in 2026, communities move into the Teams navigation, and premium features are license-bound. teamly is a focused product with a clear roadmap and a fixed contact person.

Pricing and contract

How both vendors calculate

Microsoft Viva Engage

Microsoft's prices are public but tiered: Viva Engage Core is part of the tiered M365 plans (F1/F3, list prices as of July 2026); premium communication features require the Employee Communications and Communities add-on or the more comprehensive Viva Suite, each with its own surcharge per user per month. Each user additionally needs a managed Entra ID account.

Buy or rent

teamly does not publish a price list either. The quote is calculated individually based on the number of users and modules, either as a purchase or a rental. Contract term: 24-month minimum, then a 12-month renewal with 3 months notice. Your own branded app in the App Store is included in every package.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What decision-makers ask most often when comparing teamly and Microsoft Viva Engage.

What is Microsoft Viva Engage and is it being discontinued?
Viva Engage is the Yammer successor (the Yammer brand ended at the end of 2024) and is not being discontinued. But Microsoft is visibly rebuilding the Viva suite: Viva Topics and Viva Goals were discontinued, the Engage live events end in 2026, and the experience increasingly moves into Teams. Planning security looks different.
Why is Viva Engage costly for frontline workers?
Every user needs an M365 license (at least the entry tier F1, as of July 2026) and an Entra ID account that IT must create, maintain, and secure. With hundreds of blue-collar employees without a company email, that is a permanent IT project. teamly works without a Microsoft account.
Can we use Viva Engage and teamly in parallel?
Yes, this is a proven pattern: Viva Engage for licensed office employees, teamly for the field. Via the teamly API, central content can be delivered into both worlds.
How secure is our data with teamly in comparison?
Microsoft stores Engage data in the EU geo (EU Data Boundary, completed February 2025), but as a US provider it remains subject to the US CLOUD Act. teamly hosts exclusively in German, ISO 27001 certified data centers under German law.
